An Enchanting Visit by the Owl, Pueo, in Kalalau

Many years ago, now, I camped in Kalalau Valley with several friends. We were short on  I hiked
out one day and filled my pack with food. I fooled around too long the next day and made the  ridiculous decision to walk the trail back under the light of the full moon.  ( I don’t recommend this for anyone or for myself. )

This is not a story about falling off the cliff or anything. I was lucky and had a great trip. Keep in mind that I had hiked the trail many times before.

I reached “Red Hill”, a high point just before the decent into the valley.  The moon was very bright and I could see down into the valley where my friends had, much earlier, gone to sleep about a mile and a half up the valley.  The waves along the long beach were lit by moonlight.  I was pretty darn tired, and ready to head down the hill.

It was then that a white object flew at me from the direction of the beach. It was strangely silent.
Suddenly it was all most in my face, a huge pure white or nearly white owl, making no sound before
or after it passed a few feet over my head.  The owl, still silent, making now sound of wind or from its mouth made 3 passes and disappeared forever.  I had never seen the Hawaiian Owl in years of living there and have never again seen it.

Tired before its appearance, I was filled with energy until I slept a little shy of an hour later.

Confessions of a Kalalau Outlaw

Confessions of a Kalalau Outlaw
(This is the beginning of a longer detailed account of a hiker who hung out
for longer than most in Kalalau Valley. The valley is a State Park. Its use
is regulated by the state, so this fellow was a bit a of a renegade. A link to the story in its entirety is at the bottom of this excerpt.)

I started up Kauai, Hawaii’s 11-mile Na Pali Coast trail at the crack of noon. The plan had been to get an early start—I’d spent the previous night at Haena Campground, a mile from the trailhead on Kauai’s north shore, to make that goal easily attainable. But it had stormed all night, keeping me awake in my slightly leaky tent, and I’d reasoned that getting a few extra hours of shut-eye was more important than sticking to the principle of an early start. I’d hiked the trail a half-dozen times before, and so knew that I had some flexibility in terms of camping for the night, if it appeared I wasn’t going to make it to the Kalalau Campground, at the end of the trail, as intended.

The Na Pali Coast or Kalalau trail is neither a walk in the park, nor a stroll on the beach. In fact, the only beach you see along the way is small but picturesque Hanakapeii Beach, nestled in a valley two miles in. The rest is rocky coastline. The only reason there is a trail here at all is because the pali (cliffs in native Hawaiian) were too unyielding to build a connecting road along this 15-mile section of coastline. And even the trail itself comes to a screeching halt at a series of sheer, dramatic, multi-colored ridges that jut out into the Pacific, forming a virtually impenetrable barrier to us two-legged types (the goats get around just fine).

Kalalau Valley : From very high ridges above the valley.

When you drive to Kokee, clear across the island from Kalalau Valley, you can find the trailhead to the hike in this video. It is thrilling, to say the least. This hike. is not suitable for small children. Be aware that the earth is crumbly and there is no catching yourself if you fall. It is not possible ( even for the very skilled or very crazy ) to reach the Kalalau Valley floor or beach from anywhere on top. Neither is it possible to climb out of the valley.

Beautiful video shots of Kauai. Some of the Na Pali coast.

Awa’awapuhi Valley from the Top

This Stunningly beautiful trail begins near Kokee.  The it is not accessible from Kalalau Valley or the Kalalau Trail.  The views are stunning I will add more details about  this great place in a few days. View full screen
for the best experience.
